What could a 15-year-old, 12-year-old and 7-year-old love about Brokerage Brewing Company?
They can’t come inside… or on the porch. They don’t know our product.
But, the Gould Chaos Kids Farm members-- Brayden, Kennedy and Landon—and their 4H farm animals play a part in the success of Brokerage Brewing Company. This group makes great use of our spent grain.
Spent grain, which can make up as much as 85% of a brewery’s total by-product, is the leftover malt and adjuncts after the mash has extracted most of the sugars, proteins and nutrients. Instead of simply throwing away our spent brewer’s grain, Brokerage Brewing Company—like many craft breweries all over the country— shares the wealth.
About once a week our 400 lb barrels are picked up and hauled away to help three 4H kids (and their goats, rabbits, chickens and pigs) grow! The spent grains supplement the feed for the animals, helping to make their coats shine and their yolks yellow! They love it! Spent grains are high in protein and carbs, which equals animal energy! And, there’s lots of fat in the darker, sweeter beer grains.
Not only is a lot of money saved on the feed costs, but there’s plenty to go around. The 800-1000lbs of spent grains are shared with another farmer. In the colder months, straw is placed around the spent grains so it keeps fermenting, therefore producing heat to keep it thawed.
So, the next time you’re at a 4H Fair, check the display signs in the animal barns. You might find one of your favorite local breweries represented, thanks to you!
You drink it, we share it!
